Your boasting is not appropriate.
Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough?
Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become
a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened.
(1 Corinthians 5:6-7)
Sin should not be taken lightly. A small amount of sin can affect an entire community. A humble and contrite heart recognizes the seriousness of sin and the need for God’s forgiveness. Discipline should be applied equally, regardless of a person’s status. Discipline, when done in love, aims to restore the sinner. We should rely on God’s guidance in dealing with difficult situations and to trust in His ultimate plan for restoration and healing. Trusting in His timing and purposes, even in difficult situations, is crucial for spiritual growth and community health. Let us follow Jesus’ example and teachings so that we may live holy lives, reflecting God’s character and setting an example for others.
Sin’s Ripple
Sin should not be taken lightly,
Its shadow spreads, affecting all,
A humble heart, contrite and rightly,
Seeks God’s forgiveness when we fall.
A small sin can taint the whole,
A community’s peace, it can disrupt,
But discipline, fair and whole,
Restores the sinner, lifts them up.
Regardless of one’s status high,
Discipline must be applied,
In love, it aims to rectify,
And bring the lost back to God’s side.
In difficult times, we seek His grace,
Rely on God’s guidance, pure and true,
Trust His plan, His healing embrace,
For spiritual growth, for me and you.
Trust in His timing, His divine will,
Even when the path seems unclear,
For in His purpose, we find still,
A way to grow, to persevere.
Let us follow Jesus’ way,
Live holy lives, reflect His light,
Set examples every day,
In God’s love, we find our might.

II: Disorders in the Corinthian Community, B: Moral Disorders
A CASE OF INCEST
1 Corinthians 5:1-16
First Reading | 1 Corinthians 5:1-8
1 Brothers and sisters: It is widely reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of a kind not found even among pagans—a man living with his father’s wife. 2 And you are inflated with pride. Should you not rather have been sorrowful? The one who did this deed should be expelled from your midst. 3 I, for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as if present, pronounced judgment on the one who has committed this deed, 4 in the name of our Lord Jesus: when you have gathered together and I am with you in spirit with the power of the Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. 6 Your boasting is not appropriate. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? 7 Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our Paschal Lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Background:
1 Corinthians 5:1-8 addresses a serious issue within the Corinthian church: a case of sexual immorality that was not even tolerated among the Gentiles. Specifically, it involved a man having a relationship with his father’s wife, which was considered incestuous.
Historical and Cultural Context
Corinth was a major commercial hub in ancient Greece, known for its wealth and moral laxity. The city was a melting pot of cultures and religions, which often led to a blending of various moral standards2. The church in Corinth struggled with maintaining Christian ethical standards amidst this environment.
Key Points in 1 Corinthians 5:1-8
Public Knowledge of Sin: The sin was widely known, yet the church was complacent and even proud, rather than mourning and addressing the issue.
Paul’s Judgment: Paul, though not physically present, had already judged the situation and called for the church to take action.
Discipline and Purity: Paul instructed the church to remove the immoral person from their fellowship to maintain the purity of the church. This act was meant to lead to the sinner’s repentance and ultimate salvation.
Leaven Analogy: Paul used the analogy of leaven (yeast) to illustrate how a small amount of sin can affect the whole community. He urged the Corinthians to be like unleavened bread, symbolizing purity and sincerity.
Spiritual Implications
Paul’s message emphasizes the importance of church discipline and the need for a community to uphold God’s standards. It also reflects the broader biblical theme of holiness and the call for believers to live lives that honor God.
Learning Lessons:
1. The Seriousness of Sin. Paul highlights the gravity of sin, especially when it is openly known and unaddressed within the church. This passage reminds us that sin should not be taken lightly, and it calls for a community that upholds God’s standards.
2. The Need for Church Discipline. Paul instructs the Corinthians to remove the immoral person from their fellowship. This teaches us the importance of church discipline in maintaining the purity and integrity of the community. Discipline, when done in love, aims to restore the sinner and protect the church.
3. The Impact of Sin on the Community. Using the analogy of leaven, Paul shows how a small amount of sin can affect the entire community. This emphasizes the interconnectedness of the church and the need for vigilance in addressing sin to prevent it from spreading.
4. The Call to Holiness. Paul urges the Corinthians to be like unleavened bread, symbolizing purity and sincerity. This calls believers to live holy lives, reflecting God’s character and setting an example for others.
5. The Role of Mourning and Repentance. The passage underscores the importance of mourning over sin and seeking repentance. It encourages a humble and contrite heart that recognizes the seriousness of sin and the need for God’s forgiveness.
6. Trust in God’s Wisdom and Justice. By following Paul’s instructions, the Corinthians were to trust in God’s wisdom and justice. This teaches us to rely on God’s guidance in dealing with difficult situations and to trust in His ultimate plan for restoration and healing.
7. Inclusivity and Equality. While the passage deals with a specific case of immorality, it also reminds us of the importance of treating all members of the community with fairness and without favoritism. Discipline should be applied equally, regardless of a person’s status.
8. Practical Service and Hands-On Ministry. Addressing sin within the church is a form of practical service. It involves hands-on ministry that seeks to restore individuals and maintain the health of the community.
9. Obedience to Jesus. Paul’s instructions reflect obedience to Jesus’ teachings on dealing with sin and maintaining the purity of the church. This encourages us to follow Jesus’ example and teachings in our own lives.
10. God’s Sovereignty and Plans. Ultimately, the passage reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His plans for His church. Trusting in His timing and purposes, even in difficult situations, is crucial for spiritual growth and community health.
